FCK vs. VFB: Battle of the south-west

These two know each other well. 1. FC Kaiserslautern and VfB Stuttgart have played 84 times in the top-flight alone. Both sides are founding members of the Bundesliga and have also played seven times in the cup. The last time they met in the DFB-Pokal was 24 years ago. That was on August 25th 1993 when Kaiserslautern knocked out Stuttgart in the second round, winning 6-2.

“It’s a real traditional battle against a strong opposition,” said VfB head coach, Hannes Wolf. “It’s sure to be an intense match and a great atmosphere,” he continued. VfB last reached the cup final in the 2012/13 season, but only reached the round of 16 once in the four years after that.

Kaiserslautern dominant – VfB struggle

1. FCK breezed through the first round of the cup, defeating Oberligist side SV Eichede 4-0. Osayamen Osawa netted a brace. Stuttgart had a far trickier task. They had to come from 2-0 down against Energie Cottbus, eventually winning 4-3 on penalties.

Kaiserslautern haven’t been in the best form in the league though. The team from Baden-Württemberg only picked up one point from their first six games, leaving them in last place. This led to the sacking of head coach and former FCK player, Jeff Strasser, in favour of Greuther Fürth. Belief has returned to Kaiserslautern. Greuther Fürth won his first match in charge, before drawing against St. Pauli.

Stuttgart have had a mixed return to the top tier. Their recent 2-1 victory over 1. FC Köln on matchday nine ended a run of three matches without a win, but it came at a cost: defender Marcin Kaminski injured his ankle and will be out for five to six weeks.
