FC Bayern's women claim victory in crunch match against Wolfsburg

The defending champions FC Bayern München recorded a 1-0 victory over VfL Wolfsburg on matchday 3 of the Allianz Women's Bundesliga to claim the top spot in the standings.

The respect that both teams have for each other was clear to see as Wolfsburg created the first dangerous opportunity after just two minutes. Julia Simic's attempted chip, following a defensive error from the home side, was not enough to beat FC Bayern keeper Tinja-Riikka Korpela. Ten minutes later at the other end, Vivianne Miedema found herself in a dangerous position and in space following a free kick but her effort on target was lacking power.

Abbé breaks the deadlock

The game then largely took place in midfield until the 35rd minute, when Germany international Melanie Behringer aimed for the far post from her free kick and found centre back Caroline Abbé Almuth Schult, who lobbed the ball over Wolfsburg's keeper with a well-timed header. The visitors began to increase the pressure following the conceded opener and were almost rewarded with the equaliser before half time. This time, Simic was able to get past keeper Korpela, but her shot was cleared on the line from Nora Hostad-Berge just seconds before the half time whistle.

Wolfsburg continued to push forward after the break and Bayern were forced to stand quite deep as they looked to defend their narrow lead. Alexandra Popp was unfortunate shortly after the hour-mark, when her 20-yard effort struck the post. Bayern were looking to play on the counter and nearly doubled their lead in the closing stages of the match, but Leupolz' attempt hit the woodwork and FC Bayern secured a hard-fought victory.
