FC Bayern women to take narrow advantage to PSG

FC Bayern women set themselves up nicely to progress to the last four of the Champions League with a 1-0 win over PSG in the first leg of their Quarterfinal. 6,500 spectators, including Bayern München president Uli Hoeneß and current manager Carlo Ancelotti, watched Vivianne Miedema score the only goal of the game for Thomas Wörle’s reigning Bundesliga champions. At the other end goalkeeper Tinja-Riikka Korpela pulled off a string of fine saves to preserve the advantage.

“We had a little bit of fortune,” said Wörle after the game. "If you’re playing at this level then you have to have exceptional players like we did today in the form of Vivianne Miedema up front and Tinja-Riikka Korpela in goal,” added the coach.

The return leg takes place in Paris next Wednesday at 8pm.

Marozsan help give Lyon advantage over Wolfsburg

It was not such a good night for Germany’s other representative in the Champions League as VFL Wolfsburg were beaten 2-0 at home by Lyon, thanks to a wonderful strike from Dzsenifer Marozsan. Camille Abily had opened the scoring, beating Germany international goalkeeper Almuth Schult with a free kick.

Marozsan described the game beforehand as being between the "best two teams in women’s football." The high quality encounter saw Lyon take a big advantage into the second leg as Wolfsburg, currently second in the Women’s Bundesliga, failed to make the most of some useful openings in front of goal.

Ralf Kellermann’s side will head to France for the return leg knowing they must win to have a chance of progressing.
