FC Bayern return to winning ways

Table toppers FC Bayern München beat Borussia Dortmund 1-0 on Saturday evening. Former Dortmund striker Robert Lewandowski grabbed the winner in the 36th minute.

The first half hour was a balanced affair and didn’t see too much goalmouth action. The only real chance in the opening exchanges fell to Bayern’s Thomas Müller. His lob beat Roman Weidenfeller but drifted wide of goal and was cleared to safety.

Lewandowski makes the difference

Xabi Alonso’s 32nd minute free kick almost opened the scoring. The Spaniard’s set piece curled narrowly wide of the near post, however, Bayern did take the lead just minutes later. Clever play from Lewandowski set Müller free and although his effort was kept out by Weidenfeller, the Polish striker was on hand to head home the rebound.

Borussia improved after the break and could have levelled after 51 minutes but Ilkay Gündogan’s long range effort didn’t test Neuer. If truth be told, it was a quiet evening for Germany’s number one. Reus’ effort just after the hour failed to test him. He did pull off a fantastic save with just two minutes on the clock from Reus to ensure that his clean sheet was maintained and that Bayern picked up another three points in their quest for the title.
