FC Bayern reach the summit

FC Bayern München remain unbeaten after eight games of the new Allianz Women’s Bundesliga. Thomas Wörle’s side now top the table after a 4-0 victory against newly-promoted SC Sand. VfL Wolfsburg can return to the top of the table with a victory tomorrow. The visitors have now lost six games in a row and are currently in tenth place in the table having picked up four points so far this season.

The game at the Stadion an der Grünwalder played out as expected – Bayern dominated the early exchanges and limited the guests to a few counter-attacks. Bayern took the lead in the eighth minute through Vivianne Miedema. The Netherlands international picked the ball up on the edge of the box and fired an unstoppable effort past visiting keeper Mallori Lofton-Malachi.

Stunning first-half performance from the home team

The hosts continued to maintain a grip on proceedings and were never really troubled by the visitors. Germany international Melanie Behringer doubled their lead shortly before the half an hour mark. Her precise free kick found the back of the net after going over the wall. Miedema netted her second of the match less than four minutes later after showing great technical ability to escape her marker. Her goal made it 3-0 to the home side after just 31 minutes.

The half time result reflected the balance of play, although both teams were not at their best. The newly promoted played in an anxious manner and didn’t create any clear cut chances. Despite this Nikolaus Koutroubis’ side never gave up and showed good fight – the goals they conceded were Bayern’s only shot on target in the half.

Uneventful second half

The second half was a much more relaxed affair than the first. Bayern remained in control but didn’t create too many chances. The visitors maintained a strong shape and made it difficult for the home side, although they always looked dangerous from wide positions. Miedema should have completed her hat-trick in the 68th minute but the home supporters didn’t have to wait long to see another goal. Melanie Leupolz added a fourth for the home side nine minutes later. The only other action in the half saw Eunice Beckmann have shot comfortably saved from long range shortly before full time.
