FC Bayern extend lead, Gomez on target as Wolves win in Leipzig

Record champions FC Bayern München have extended their lead at the top of the Bundesliga standings on matchday 24, securing a 3-0 home-victory against Eintracht Frankfurt. Bayern now lead by ten points over RB Leipzig, who suffered a 1-0 home-loss to VfL Wolfsburg. Borussia Dortmund, third in the standings, also suffered a defeat losing 2-1 at Hertha BSC.

No winner emerged in the game between SC Freiburg and TSG 1899 Hoffenheim, as the game ended in a 1-1 draw. Meanwhile, bottom-side SV Darmstadt managed a 2-1 home-victory against 1. FSV Mainz, but still trail a non-relegation spot by eleven points.

Müller with his tenth assist of the season

Frankfurt nearly took the lead in the Allianz Arena from Branimir Hrgota, but World Champion Mats Hummels made a terrific last-ditch tackle to deny the visitors a certain goal after 19 minutes. Ruthlessly, the hosts took the lead from their first clear chance as Robert Lewandowski slotted home from Thomas Müller’s assist six minutes before half-time. Bayern added a quick second goal two minutes later, as Douglas Costa finished off a fine attack down the left side and Lewandowski grabbed the third after the break with his 21st goal of the season.

Germany international Mario Gomez gave Wolfsburg the perfect start in Leipzig, bagging the opener after nine minutes. Leipzig struggled to find their rhythm and Wolfsburg created more chances in the second half to potentially extend their lead but ultimately settled for the 1-0 victory. Wolfsburg’s Andries Jonker thus remains unbeaten as a coach in the Bundesliga, having earned five victories and two draws from the seven games he’s been in charge for.

Plattenhardt fires Hertha to victory over BVB

Dortmund struggled in Berlin’s Olympic Stadium right from the start and the hosts took the lead after eleven minutes from Salomon Kalou. The visitors pushed for the equaliser but Hertha’s defence stood solid until after the break, when Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang levelled for Dortmund. With roughly twenty minutes left to play, Hertha regained the lead from Marvin Plattenhardt’s direct free-kick.

Freiburg and Hoffenheim produced a low-key affair in the first half with very few chances for either side. The second half began with Germany U21 international Maximilian Philipp giving SCF the lead. His penalty was initially saved by TSG keeper Oliver Baumann but Philipp slotted home the rebound. The visitors managed a quick response and levelled through Andrej Kramaric’s stunning strike on the hour-mark.

Bottom-side Darmstadt took an early lead against Mainz as Aytac Sulu bagged the opener after five minutes. Sidney Sam added a second from the penalty spot just eight minutes later. Mainz were back in the game when Robin Quaison cut Darmstadt’s lead in half just before half-time. SVD’s Mario Vrancic was sent off after 59 minutes for his second bookable offense and Mainz also ended the game with just ten players, after Stefan Bell picked up his second yellow card just prior to the final whistle.

Ingolstadt fight for a point against Köln

Ingolstadt fought back from two deficits to end the game 2-2, thereby earning a point against 1. FC Köln. Modeste put the Rhineland side ahead twice in the 15th and 60th minute, whilst Lezcano and Brégerie answered back on the 42nd and 69th minute marks respectively. Realistically, a point was not enough for either side, as Köln could have done with more in order to move up to sixth and secure a European place. Meanwhile, Ingolstadt are yet to put considerable pressure on Hamburg, who play tomorrow and remain five points ahead of them.
