Facts on the Olympics dress rehearsal against Ghana

The Germany women’s team are well under way with their preparation for the Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro. On Friday (18:00 CEST, live on ARD), fans can watch the team go up against Ghana in Paderborn. It is not only the last friendly before their journey to Brazil, but the game at the Benteler-Arena will also be head coach Silvia Neid’s last home game before she is replaced by Steffi Jones.

It is the first encounter between Ghana and Germany in the history of women’s football. Nigeria and Ivory Coast are the only two African teams to have played against the Germany team.

Black Queens fail to qualify for Rio

The Ghanaian team are also known as the "Black Queens", and contested their first international in a 5-1 defeat to Nigeria in 1991. They failed to qualify for both of the last two World Cups in Canada and Germany, and have only taken part in 1999, 2003 and 2007. However, they have failed to progress from the group stage every time, and their only victory was a 2-1 win over Australia at the 2003 World Cup.

Ghana missed out on qualification for the Olympic Games in Rio. After success against Egypt, the Black Queens lost to Cameroon in the third round of African qualification. Cameroon then went on to lose against Zimbabwe in the last round, who will face Germany in the Group stage in Brazil.

Ghana undefeated in 14 games

Ghana have contested two internationals so far this year – in April, the team beat Tunisia in qualification for the Africa Cup of Nations, and secured their ticket to the tournament.

Ghana are undefeated in 14 international matches (seven victories, seven draws), and have won all of their last four. Their last defeat was a 1-0 against Algeria at the Africa Cup of Nations on 12th October 2014.

The West African team are managed by Yusif Basigi, who is also head coach of Sekondi Hasaacas FC men’s team in the Ghanaian Premier League, as well as the club’s women’s team, who are currently top of the league with 24 points. Basigi was chosen as the best coach, after victory at the Africa Games.

Germany Women hoping for 125th victory on home soil

At their Olympics dress rehearsal, Germany women are looking for their 125th victory on home soil. In 160 international matches in Germany, there have been 124 wins, 20 draws and 16 defeats, with 552 goals scored and 102 conceded.

Germany have won eight of their last ten internationals since the 2015 World Cup (one draw, one defeat), with a record of 34 goals scored to just three conceded. Since losing the World Cup quarter-final to Japan (1-0 after extra-time) in July 2011, the Germany team have lost only one of 23 home internationals. Their 23rd victory could follow in Paderborn.
