European Under-17 Championship: Wück names 18-man squad

Excitement and anticipation continue to grow as the European Under-17 Championship draws closer. The tournament will take place from the 3rd to 19th May in Croatia with Germany due to arrive on 30th April. Christian Wück has now named his squad, which includes two goalkeepers and 16 outfield players.

14 of the 18 players were involved in qualifiers in March. Germany finished top of their group and scored 19 goals – the most out of all teams. They are looking to continue this fine form at the EUROs. "We have complete confidence in the lads," said Christian Wück. "We have lots of dangerous players, top tacklers and a solid formation. We can travel to Croatia full of confidence."

Wück has had to make four changes to the squad involved in the qualifiers. Injured goalkeeper Christian Früchtl (Bayern München) is replaced by Luis Klatte (Hertha BSC), while midfielder Sahverdi Cetin (Eintracht Frankfurt) travels in place of Nicolas Kühn (RB Leipzig). Meanwhile, Jean-Manuel Mbom (Werder Bremen) and John Yeboah (VfL Wolfsburg) have both returned to full fitness and link up with the team once again.

Favourites to top Group C

Germany’s first Group C game will be against Bosnia and Herzegovina on 4th May (12:00 CEST). They face Serbia on 7th May (12:00 CEST) before their final group game sees them take on Ireland on 10th May (12:00 CEST).

“We are of course the favourites in the group," said Wück after the draw took place on 3rd April in Zagreb. "But it will be a tricky task as Ireland didn’t concede a single goal in qualifying, while both Serbia and Bosnia and Herzegovina are well-known for their energetic and passionate playing style. We will prepare to the best of our ability and hope to show just how good we are.”

The European Under-17 Championship will take place in Zagreb and Rijeka. There are five stadiums in the Croatian capital and two venues in the coastal area. The tournament also counts as qualification for the 2017 World Cup (6-28th October) in India. There are five spots up for grabs, which will go to the four semi-finalists and the side which finishes fifth.
