European Footballer of the Year: Marozsán and Popp nominated

Who will be Célia Šašić’s successor? Of the original players nominated for the ‘UEFA European Women’s footballer of the 2015/16 season’ award, only ten remain in contention. Two of our DFB women are still in the running for the footballer of the year award: Dzsenifer Marozsán and Alexandra Popp. The list is, however, made up largely of Lyon players.

The nominations were made by the managers of the twelve best European nations (according to the coefficient rankings) and the managers of last season’s UEFA Women’s Champions League quarterfinalists.

Vote on the 25th August

The winner will be determined on the 25th August. Beforehand, a jury of 20 ESM Group journalists will shortlist the ‘best’ three players. In the third and final stage of voting, the same jury will choose a winner. The result will be announced at the group stage draw for the UEFA Champions League 2016/17.

The three previous winners of the award all come from Germany: Nadine Angerer (2013), Nadine Keßler (2014), Célia Šašić (2015).

Alongside two Germany players this year, there are a further eight players; all from Lyon. The nominees are:

Camille Abily (Lyon & France)
Ada Hegerberg (Lyon & Norway)
Amandine Henry (Lyon/Portland Thorns & France)
Saki Kumagai (Lyon & Japan)
Eugenie Le Sommer (Lyon & France)
Amel Majri (Lyon & France)
Dszenifer Marozsán (Frankfurt/Lyon & Germany)
Louisa Nécib (Lyon & France)
Alexandra Popp (Wolfsburg & Germany)
Wendie Renard (Lyon & France)
