European Championship qualifiers: Hrubesch calls up Stendera, Haberer and Vlachodimos

DFB manager Horst Hrubesch has named 22 players in his squad for the upcoming European U21 Championship qualifying matches against Finland on the 9th October in Essen and the Faroe Islands in Tórshavn four days later.

Marc Stendera of Eintracht Frankfurt and goalkeeper Odisseas Vlachodimos of VfB Stuttgart are in the squad for the first time after missing the season opener. Janik Haberer of VfL Bochum is another new face in the team. "I'm delighted to welcome Marc Stendera and Odisseas Vlachodimos to the team," said Hrubesch. "Janik Haberer has also put in some top performances this season and has earned his call-up."

Hrubesch: "The potential to develop is huge"

The gifted side, featuring captain Leon Goretzka, Max Meyer (both FC Schalke 04) and Joshua Kimmich (FC Bayern München), are on the hunt for their next three points following their 3-0 win over Azerbaijan in their opening game. "The team have huge potential to develop. If the players fulfil their potential, this team can achieve a lot."

The newly-formed DFB squad are battling Azerbaijan, the Faroe Islands, Finland, Austria and Russia in their qualifying group for the 2017 European U21 Championship in Poland. "Finland have taken six points from two games and lead the way in the group, so it'll be an indicator for us of where we're at," said Hrubesch. "We want to win the group, and for that we need to take both games seriously."
