Europa League places in sight for Hoffenheim

TSG 1899 Hoffenheim will want to get back to winning ways in the Bundesliga on Sunday following their exit in the DFB Cup in midweek to Borussia Dortmund (3-2 after extra time). A win against 1. FC Köln on Sunday (15:30 CEST) would help them to keep touch with the European places. Hoffenheim currently sit in seventh, two points behind sixth and the Europa League places. The final game of matchday 28 will be between VfB Stuttgart and Werder Bremen (17:30 CEST).

Hoffenheim fought hard in both their DFB Cup quarter-final and their most recent defeat in the Bundesliga. They put in a good performance against Borussia Mönchengladbach but were unable to make the most of their chances and went down 4-1. Their 0-0 draw against Paderborn on the previous matchday means that Hoffenheim have now been waiting a month for a win.

1. FC Köln have different interests in mind against their opponents. Peter Stöger’s side have remained clear of the relegation zone for the majority of the season but have failed to really pull clear. The Köln fans aren’t yet able to celebrate safety due to the five point game between themselves and the relegation zone. They will be hoping for another victory for their side at home, after only two wins and ten goals in front of their own fans this season, which is the second worst record in the league behind VfB Stuttgart (nine goals).

Reunion between Dutt and Bremen

Huub Stevens’ VfB Stuttgart have been bottom of the table for eight weeks now and are five points adrift from safety. The fact that the table is so tight will give VfB some hope. Paderborn in 17th are only one point ahead of them and Hamburg in 16th only two. All hope hasn’t been lost after Stuttgart beat Eintracht Frankfurt 3-1 and put in a good performance against Champions League candidates VfL Wolfsburg, despite losing 3-1.

The game will be particularly special for VfB’s sporting director Robin Dutt. He was manger of Bremen back in October before he was released of his duties as the team sat bottom of the table. Since Viktor Skripnik came in, Bremen’s performances have improved. The rest of the league was astounded when they won five games in a row. Recently, they have dropped off a little bit but remain ten points clear of the relegation places.
