EURO countdown: 18 days, 18 referees

18 days, 18 referees: The 15th European Championship will kick off in France in under three weeks, when the hosts take on Romania on 10th June at the Stade de France in Saint-Denis. Overall, there will be 51 matches taking place between 10th June and 10th July, which will be officiated by 18 referees. Among the officials selected by UEFA’s refereeing panel is FIFA referee Dr. Felix Brych from Germany, as well as his assistants Mark Borsch from Mönchengladbach and Stefan Lupp from Zossen.

EURO 2016 will be the first time that the lawyer from Munich and his team have officiated in the European Championship finals, however, that does not mean that they are lacking international experience. Brych has been a DFB referee since 1999, a Bundesliga official since 2004 and a FIFA referee since 2007. The 40-year-old oversaw games at the 2012 Olympics in London and took charge of two matches at the 2014 World Cup in Brazil. His other career highlights include officiating in the DFB Cup final and the Europa League in 2015. Furthermore, Brych was voted as Germany’s Referee of the Year in the 2012/13 and 2014/15 seasons.

The refereeing team for EURO 2016 will meet on 6th June in France. Just like at EURO 2012 and in the 2016 European Championship qualifiers, the referees will be supported by additional assistants. Each officiating team will consist of a main referee, two linesmen and two assistant referees.
