England take a step towards knockout rounds with late winner

England are one step closer to the knockout stages of EURO 2016 thanks to substitutes Jamie Vardy and Daniel Sturridge. England came back from 1-0 down to win an enthralling contest 2-1 in the final minute of the match. Gareth Bale gave Wales the lead from a free kick, just as he did against Slovakia, but Vardy cancelled his opener out ten minutes after coming on as a substitute at half time. It looked like the game was destined for a draw but another England substitute, Sturridge, netted a winner in added time.

England’s last minute win leaves them on four points and places them above Wales (three points), Slovakia (three points) and Russia (one point) in the Group B table. England and Wales both need a draw in their final group match to progress through to the knockout stages. England will face off against Slovakia and Wales will take on Russia. Both matches will take place on Monday at 21:00 CEST.

First EURO win for Northern Ireland

Northern Ireland celebrated their first victory in the history of the European Championship. The EURO new boys beat Ukraine 2-0 in their second match in Group B. Centre-back Gareth McAuley headed Northern Ireland in front in the 49th minute and the knockout punch was delivered in the sixth minute of added time by Niall McGinn. Ukraine struggled to create many goalscoring opportunities in the pouring rain and hail against Northern Ireland’s defensive set-up, meaning that their win was not undeserved.

Northern Ireland climbed up to third with their three points and are tied with Germany and Poland who will play later this evening (21:00 CEST). Ukraine stay bottom of Group B with no points and will have to win against Poland in their final group match in order to have a small chance of making it to the quarterfinals.
