Emphatic victory for Germany’s women against the Faroe Islands

The Germany women’s national team picked up an urgently needed win in their fourth game of World Cup qualification group 5. The Olympic champions won 11-0 against the Faroe Islands at home in Baden-Württemberg, Germany after suffering their first defeat in 19 years in a 3-2 loss to Iceland last Friday.

It was the third win for national coach Steffi Jones’ team. Only the top team from each group earns direct qualification to the 2019 World Cup in France, while the four best second-placed teams go into a play-off round. The Germany women will have to wait until 7th April 2018 to play their next competitive match, when they face the Czech Republic. Nevertheless, they will play a friendly on 24th November (KO 18:00 CEST) against France in Bielefeld.

Alexandra Popp (12’, 30’, 45+1’), Tabea Kemme (15’, 27’) and Kathrin Hendrich (33’) scored the goals in the first half to secure a very healthy lead at the break in the first-leg fixture. Lina Magull (48’) and Hasret Kayikci with four goals (63’, 75’, 83’, 89’), including a flawless third, scored the remainder in the second half.
