Emphatic 8-1 victory over Fiji to start World Cup campaign

The U20s' World Cup campaign has got off to a flying start in New Zealand. Frank Wormuth’s side beat Fiji 8-1 in their opening game in Group F. The match took place in Christchurch in front of 5,296 fans.

"I’m very pleased with the game and the result," said Wormuth. "We took ten minutes to get into the game. Afterwards we dominated the match and our opponents. The second half started in a similar fashion to the first and Fiji scored their first ever World Cup goal. Given the half-time score, it’s normal that we eased off slightly in the second 45."

The Germany manager‘s attention quickly switched to the next challenge. His side face Uzbekistan, who lost their opening game to Honduras 4-3, in Christchurch once again on Thursday (09:00 CEST). "We’ve gained the necessary self-confidence for the upcoming matches," commented Wormuth. "We’ll work on our game plan for the Uzbekistan match over the next few days."

Stark bags a brace, Mukhtar scores hat-trick

1. FC Nürnberg’s Niklas Stark broke down the opposition defence for the first time in the 18th minute and the goals started to flood in soon after. Germany celebrated three times in the space of seven minutes as Marc Stendera (Eintracht Frankfurt), Grischa Prömel (1899 Hoffenheim) and Stark once again all hit the target. Benfica’s Hany Mukhtar added two more goals to Germany’s tally before the break.

After the break, Iosefo Verevou scored Fiji’s first World Cup goal but it didn’t have much impact on the game. Dynamo Dresden’s Marvin Stefaniak got his name on the scoresheet before Hany Mukhtar converted a penalty in the closing stages to wrap things up.
