Elite Cup: Germany U20s victorious against Turkey

The Germany U20 team started the Mercedes-Benz Elite Cup tournament with a win. Frank Wormuth’s side beat Turkey 1-0 on Tuesday evening, with Max Dittgen (43’) scoring the only goal of the match.

Wormuth was very pleased with the performance of his side. "It is sensational, what the team did today," praised the 55-year-old, who brought in a lot of new faces for the match. He was particularly pleased with his team’s performance going forward. "The team grasped the concepts very quickly and adapted very well," said Wormuth. His one criticism was the lack of goals. "We could have made better use of our chances, in order to decide the game earlier." The DFB side hit the post and crossbar in the second, as well as missing a penalty.

Dittgen scores after good build up

They started the game very sharp in front of 2268 spectators at the Donaustadion. The first corner came after just four minutes, which was dealt with well by Turkey keeper Ugurcan Cakir. Their best chance of the opening exchange came in the 30th minute, after Amiri dribbled through multiple defenders forcing one of Turkey’s defenders to make an excellent last ditch clearance to prevent the 1-0. Germany increased the pressure as the half went on, and eventually they got their goal. Wittek gave the ball to Amiri, who in turn passed it to Waldschmidt. The Frankfurter had the calmness of mind to pick out the better positioned Max Dittgen, who put the ball away emphatically.

Penalty, post and crossbar

They started the second half very brightly too, with Waldschmidt winning a penalty early on. Wittek though did not take advantage and missed the opportunity to build a two-.goal cushion. They did not lift off though, and hit the woodwork twice before the end of the match. They will continue their quest for the trophy on Saturday (18:00 CEST) against the Netherlands, who lost their opening match 3-1 to England.
