Eintracht salvage a point from a two goal deficit

Eintracht Frankfurt and Werder Bremen battled it out in a 2-2 draw to kick off Matchday 28 of the Bundesliga. Despite going nine games now without a win, Eintracht sit in seventh place and are only two points away from a Europa League spot. On the other hand, Werder are riding a streak of eight games in which they are yet to be defeated, and are two points and three places behind Frankfurt. Zlatko Junuzovic (37’) took advantage of Bremen’s first chance to give them the lead, before Fin Bartels doubled it only minutes later (43’). Frankfurt started the second half strongly, with Mijat Gacinovic (48’) getting a goal back for the Hessen outfit. The comeback was completed by Marco Fabian’s penalty in the 73rd minute.

Frankfurt put the North German side under a lot of pressure from the outset, and David Abraham’s audacious shot from around 30 metres out smashed back off the crossbar after only 10 minutes of play. Seconds later, Branimir Hrgota (11’) failed to latch onto a ball that went across the penalty area. The trend of missed chances continued as Gacinovic and Hrgota were denied by a fantastic Felix Wiedwald double-save (27’).

Eintracht make a furious comeback

Then Bremen dealt an ice-cold blow: Florian Kainz assisted Junuzovic’s goal, and then Bartels got another with a clever finish on the counter. Shortly before the break, Gacinovic had another chance, but Wiedwald was equal to it. Everything changed after the break though, as Abraham’s header from a corner found Gacinovic’s knee, off which the ball found its way into the back of the net. Eintracht fought hard for the equaliser and were rewarded when Moisander conceded a foul in the penalty area, and the ensuing penalty was converted by Fabian.

The rest of the game was very open: Florian Grillitsch (76’) had his effort parried by Eintracht keeper Lukas Hradecky, and at the other end Danny Blum’s shot from 16 metres out was too high (80’). Minutes later, Haris Seferovic had a great chance, but couldn’t get the ball into the back of the net amongst a cluster of Werder defenders from five metres out. Bremen were so close to securing all three points in the final minute, had Max Kruse’s shot not been blocked.
