Eighth Bundesliga title for Schweinsteiger

Bayern München were confirmed as German Champions for the 25th time on Sunday. The record champions wrapped up the success with four games to go. World Cup winner Bastian Schweinsteiger has now won the league eight times with Bayern, which draws him level with Mehmet Scholl and Oliver Kahn.

FC Bayern beat Hertha BSC 1-0 in the Allianz Arena on Saturday and results elsewhere meant the title was sewn up this evening. Wolfsburg had to win against Borussia Mönchengladbach to keep their faint title hopes alive but Max Kruse’s late goal means Bayern are now 15 points clear of the Wolves with just four games to go.

Bayern won the title after 27 games last season, which is currently the quickest it has taken a side to confirm success. In 2012/13 under Jupp Heynckes it took them 28 games.

Focus now on the cup

Celebrations? Open top tour bus? Not yet. Bayern are in DFB Cup semi final action on Tuesday against Borussia Dortmund (20:30 CEST). Sporting director Matthias Sammer is now focussed on lifting the cup: “We want to reach the final. We’ll need to be at our best. We certainly want to reach Berlin because it’s a fantastic occasion.”
