Eichede: The smallest town in the DFB Cup

SV Eichede are set to face 1. FC Kaiserslautern in the first round of the DFB Cup on Saturday 12th August at 15:30 CEST. SV Eichede come from a town where there are only 848 inhabitants, the smallest in the DFB Cup competition. They have a tough task ahead of them when traditional club 1. FC Kaiserslautern make the trip up north.

SV Eichede were relegated from the Regionalliga Nord last season and only reached the first round of the DFB Pokal through the back door. Although they were defeated 4-2 by Holstein Kiel in their regional cup final, Kiel had already secured their place in the tournament from their position in the 3. Liga, meaning that Eichede progressed to the main draw as cup finalists and can now look forward to their debut in the DFB Pokal.

Moving to Lübeck

Qualifying for the DFB Cup was a conciliation after a disappointing season for SV Eichede. Last season, SV Eichede finished bottom of the Regionalliga Nord and will be playing in the Oberliga Schleswig-Holstein this season. Even though two-time DFB Cup winners FC Kaiserslautern are the favourites to win, head coach Norbert Meier demands a serious performance from his team: “We will be taking this game just as seriously as any other.”

For ground reasons, SV Eichede have had to relocate the match to be played 25 kilometres away in Lübeck. The SV Eichede players would have wanted to play the match in their own hometown, however officials at the club decided that the Ernst-Wagener stadium would have been too small to host the match anyway, as there will be likely more than 2000 fans wanting to watch the cup tie. “We wanted to make sure that every fan who wants to buy a ticket for the match is able to,” said club chairman Olaf Gehrken.
