The Bundesliga side started the second half strongly and equalised three minutes into the period through veteran Croatian striker Ivica Olic. The hosts sprung into life and regained the lead after 58 minutes through Velimir Jovanovic. Jena looked destined to win the tie but HSV’s Michael Gregoritsch grabbed an equaliser deep into injury time (90’+4).

Aubameyang and Mkhitaryan net for BVB

Roman Bürki started between the sticks for Borussia Dortmund against Chemnitzer FC and he kept a clean sheet as BVB reached the second round in a comfortable manner. Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang (25’) grabbed the opener for a dominant Dortmund and it was somewhat of a surprise that they were “only” 1-0 up at the break. A deserved victory was wrapped up with less than 10 minutes to play when Henrikh Mkhitaryan netted a second for Thomas Tuchel’s men.

Freiburg got off to the perfect start against fifth-tier outfit HSV Barmbek-Uhlenhorst when Nils Petersen scored after just two minutes. The hosts defended doggedly and it took SCF until first half injury time to double their advantage, once again through Petersen. The striker grabbed two further goals in the second half (61’ & 63’) before Julian Schuster (71’) wrapped up an emphatic victory.

Terodde and Terrazzino fire Bochum to victory

Pierre-Christoph Göppert missed the hosts’ fourth penalty, which meant that Andrew Wooten’s successful spot kick saw Sandhausen win the tie 5-3 on penalties.

Bayern solid but unspectacular

Newly promoted Bundesliga outfit FC Ingolstadt started their season in disappointing manner, thanks to their 2-1 defeat over Bavarian rivals and Regionalliga side SpVgg Unterhaching. The hosts took a 2-0 lead thanks to a brace from Markus Einsiedler (30’ & 47’) and although Moritz Hartmann got one back for Ingolstadt with seven minutes to play, it turned out to be too little, too late.

FC Bayern raced into an early lead against Nöttingen thanks to Arturo Vidal’s third minute penalty on his debut for the Bundesliga champions. However, the hosts grabbed an equaliser through Niklas Hecht-Zirpel (16’). Normal service resumed moments later when Mario Götze put Bayern back in front; Robert Lewandowski made it 3-1 before the break. The second half was dominated by the visitors, but the scoreline remained unaltered.

Paderborn turn it around

SC Paderborn were made to work for their place in the second round in Lübeck. VfB put up a good fight and were in front at the break thanks to Stefan Richter’s 43rd minute opener. SCP, who were relegated from the Bundesliga at the end of last season, grabbed two quickfire goals after the interval through Bakalorz and Saglik.

Hannover come out on top in Kassel

The hosts impressed throughout the match and only poor finishing prevented them from pulling off a shock. Hannover sealed their victory in injury time through Kenan Karaman.

Kaiserslautern eventually progressed at the expense of Hansa Rostock but penalties were needed to settle the tie. Former Kaiserslautern star Marcel Ziemer missed his penalty for Hansa; the remaining penalties were converted, meaning the visitors progressed. Hansa, who play in the third division, dominated the game and has the better chances but visiting keeper Marius Müller was in imperious form as his side reached round two.

Mainz eased their way into round two against Energie Cottbus. Victory was never in doubt but it took them 30 minutes to hit the front.
