Drama across the continent in the Europa League

Fiorentina, who couldn’t call upon the injured Mario Gomez, drew the all-Italian affair against AS Roma 1-1. Fiorentina took the lead through Josip Ilicic after 17 minutes but were pegged back by a former Barcelona player Seydou Keita’s 77th minute goal. Roma could have already been level but Adem Ljajic’s penalty was saved by Neto (60’).

A new Europa League record was set in Spain. Sevilla’s 25-year-old winger Vitolo opened the scoring against Villarreal after just 13.2 seconds, which is the fastest goal in the tournament to date. The game eventually ended 3-1 to the side that knocked Borussia Mönchengladbach out of the tournament in the last 32.

Premier League side Everton, who were in Wolfsburg’s group, celebrated a 2-1 victory at home to Dynamo Kiev. The visitors took the lead in the first half but Naismith equalised before the break and Romelu Lukaku’s late penalty won the game for the Toffees.

Kevin Kuranyi’s early goal was cancelled out by a Gonzalo Higuain hat trick in Naples. Dynamo Moscow took the lead in the opening exchanges, but the World Cup runner-up won the game for his side by netting all three goals (25’, 31’ & 55’).

Former Hamburg stars can’t help Besiktas slipping to defeat

Besiktas, who included former Hamburg stars Gökhan Töre and Tolgay Arslan, in their squad beat Club Brugge in the first leg of their last 16 tie. Töre had given the Turkish side the lead seconds into the second half but goals from Tom de Sutter (62’) and Lior Refaelov’s penalty (79’) turned the game on its head.

The Netherlands’ record champions Ajax will also have to turn a tie around if they wish to qualify for the next. Frank de Boer’s side lost 1-0 in Ukraine to Dnipro. The winner was scored in the first half by Roman Zozulya after half an hour.

Russian side Zenit St. Petersburg have taken a huge step towards qualification for the quarter finals. They beat Torino 2-0 on Thursday night thanks to goals from Belgium’s World Cup star Axel Witsel (38’) and Domenico Criscito (53’).
