Dortmund held to draw despite Reus goal

Borussia Dortmund were held to a 1-1 draw at 1. FSV Mainz 05, despite Germany international Marco Reus firing them in front after just three minutes. Danny Latza’s late equaliser means Dortmund find themselves in fourth place, one point behind Eintracht Frankfurt. Mainz, who had lost their previous four games against BVB, climb to tenth place in the table.

The visitors from Dortmund got off to a perfect start in the sold-out Opel Arena, and took the lead just 123 seconds after kick-off. World Champion André Schürrle won the ball in midfield and, following a short sprint, fed the ball to Reus who converted for his second goal of the season.

BVB left to rue hesitant approach

Dortmund, who had Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang back in the starting line-up following his return from the Africa Cup of Nations, were pushing for a second goal early in the game, but Gonzalo Castro waited a bit too long with his chance on eleven minutes. Mainz then started to become the more proactive side, while Dortmund were content to wait for opportunities to counter. However, there weren’t really any concrete chances until the end of the first half, when Dortmund began to invest a little more into the game again.

After the break, Mainz looked to be back in control and managed to test BVB keeper Roman Bürki on several occasions. At the other end, Schürrle missed a chance to double Dortmund’s advantage on the hour mark. Borussia were left to rue their hesitation though. Germany U21 international Levin Öztunali delivered a perfect ball to the back post, where Latza was able to head in the equaliser after 83 minutes. Pablo De Blasis even had the chance to bag a winner in stoppage time, but his shot went just inches wide of the post.
