Dortmund draw in Hoffenheim

Thomas Tuchel’s Borussia Dortmund had a numerical disadvantage for over half of Friday’s game against TSG Hoffenheim but still managed to grind out a 2-2 draw in Sinsheim. Goals from Mark Uth (3’) and Sandro Wagner (20’) gave the hosts the lead on two occasions, with Mario Götze (11’) and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang (48’) grabbing equalisers. Marco Reus was sent off shortly before the break.

Hoffenheim, who are the only side in the division yet to lose this term, raced into the lead after just three minutes in front of 30,150 spectators at the Rhein-Neckar-Arena. Benjamin Hübner played in Uth, who slotted home his fifth of the season.

Götze levels

Dortmund, who were without Raphael Guerreiro, Lukasz Piszczek, Gonzalo Castro, Sebastian Rode and Nuri Sahin, came close to equalising instantly but Marcel Schmelzer and Aubameyang squandered presentable chances. However, Götze bagged his first goal since returning to Tuchel’s side after 11 minutes.

BVB keeper Roman Weidenfeller pushed a long-range effort from Kerem Demirbay behind for a corner moments later, however, this was mere respite as Wagner headed home the resulting set piece. The remainder of the half was keenly fought affair, with Marco Reus seeing red shortly before the whistle after picking up a second booking.

Wagner hits the post

Wagner had the chance to bag a third after 48 minutes but his close-range shot hit the woodwork before rebounding to safety. Julian Nagelsmann’s men were left to rue this miss as Aubameyang netted his 16th of the season to level the scores moments later.

Dortmund’s Dembélé came close to putting them in front in the 50th minute but was thwarted by Oliver Baumann. However, it was the hosts who came closest to wrapping up a win but Andrej Kramaric’s powerful shot in injury time was tipped to safety by Weidenfeller.
