Dortmund beat Hertha on penalties to reach quarter finals

Borussia Dortmund and Hertha BSC played out a tense DFB Cup round of 16 tie on Wednesday evening. The teams ended normal time and extra time on level terms with one goal apiece, meaning a penalty shootout was needed to separate them. Thomas Tuchel's side claimed the spoils from the spot, winning 3-2.

Reus scores second half equaliser

Dortmund were the stronger side for the majority of the game, creating the bulk of the chances and holding most of the ball. Hertha were penned into their own half for much of the early stages but always held a threat on the counter and grew into the game as proceedings went on. They took the lead against the run of play just after the half hour mark when Salomon Kalou knocked a cross past Roman Bürki. They took their lead into the break but just two minutes after the restart, Marco Reus scored to get the home side back level. Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang appeared to have put Dortmund ahead a little later but was judged to have committed a foul on Rune Jarstein.

Ousman Dembélé, Aubameyang and Gonzalo Castro were on target from the spot for BVB while Christian Pulisic missed, and despite Alexander Esswein and Sami Allagui converting their efforts, the misses from Fabian Lustenberger, Vladimir Daria and Kalou consigned BSC to defeat.
