Dorfmerkingen captain Zech: “We’re forming a Kehl Fan Club”

Amateur sides Sportfreunde Dorfmerkingen and 1. FC Rielasingen-Arlen were elated with the first round draw of the 2017/18 DFB-Pokal, and now Dorfmerkingen captain Christian Zech wants to set up a fan club for Sebastian Kehl, who helped with the draw. Newly promoted Regionalliga side VfB Germania Halberstadt could also hardly believe their luck, as it just so happened that their first round game will feature a contest between a father and son on opposing sides, with Halberstadt’s manager Andreas Peterson facing his son Nils and SC Freiburg. DFB.de collect the reactions to the draw in Dortmund’s Museum of Football.

Reinhard Grindel (DFB President): There was a great atmosphere in the Museum of Football. I hope that the joy of the amateur clubs is just as prevalent when it comes to the televised games. We’re expecting great fixtures with a lot of history in them.

Christian Zech (Dorfmerkingen captain): It’s a dream come true for me personally. Leipzig captain Dominik Kaiser and I played together at Germania Gmünd, and now I’ll be playing against him. Mr. Kehl, I think we’ll be forming a fan club for you!

Christian Mokosch (VfB Germania Halberstadt director): The manager was hoping for it to play out like this yesterday. We’ve achieved promotion this year, and now we’re in the first round of the DFB-Pokal. It just had to be.

Stephen Zander (Leher TS captain): It’s a great draw for us, and we already know all the bars there!

Peter Stöger (1. FC Köln manager): We’re looking forward to the game. It’s always a nice experience to play against a real underdog and it’s the essence of the magic of the cup. We’ve done well against these sides in years past and want to do so again this year and go further in the tournament.

Peter Dreide (1. FC Rielasingen-Arlen chairman): Things become more tense and nerve-racking in the second half of the draw as you begin to consider which teams are left. At some point I realised that Borussia Dortmund were still in the pot. Sebastian did a sensational job, and I thank him for that. I hope that you come to our game – we want to be fantastic hosts.

Robert Reisinger (1860 München President): We’re in the Regionalliga and I’m pleased. We have to accept the circumstances.

Sebastian Kehl: It was a lot of fun. The Museum of Football was a great venue, not least because it was here in Dortmund, who are the current defending champions. It was an exciting draw, and you could tell because of the reactions at the time. I’m now excited to see how many upsets there’ll be.
