Die Mannschaft seal perfect World Cup qualification record

The German national team finished off the World Cup campaign in style, beating Azerbaijan in the final game to seal the perfect qualification and a national record. Joachim Löw’s side celebrated topping Group C with a 5-1 victory over Azerbaijan in Kaiserslautern. It was the tenth win in ten games. Only Spain have managed this feat, in their qualification for the 2010 World Cup, although their goal difference wasn’t as high.

Only twice in their history had Die Mannschaft achieved the impeccable campaign: before the 1882 World Cup (eight wins, 33-3 goal difference) and qualifying for the 2012 European Cup (ten wins, 34-7). This means the +30 goal difference attained before the 1882 World Cup in Spain has been superseded by this year’s effort of +39.
