DFB-Team still on track to South Africa after 2-0 at Wales

Germany continued their smooth progress towards the 2010 World Cup with a 2-0 win over Wales on Wednesday. Michael Ballack set the Group Four leaders on their way before an own goal from Ashley Williams condemned John Toshack's young Wales side to back-to-back home defeats.

Germany opened the scoring through Ballack's long-range drive early in the first half and an error from Williams early in the second half gave them all the breathing space they needed.

Azerbaijan next stop on road to South Africa

The German team solidified their first place position by registering their fifth win in six games. Germany enjoys a four-point-lead over Russia in the standings, but Gus Hidding’s team, which beat Liechtenstein 1-0 on Wednesday, has only played five qualifiers so far. Germany will travel to Azerbaijan, coached by former DFB-coach Berti Vogts, for their next qualifying game on August 12.

Following the game, Joachim Löw said: “We had targeted six points out of these two games against Liechtenstein in Wales. Mission accomplished. We started-off really well, then Michael Ballack’s beautiful goal gave us another spark. During the second half, we lost a step.”
