DFB supports underprivileged children in Brazil

DFB President Wolfgang Niersbach and the delegation from Lufthansa were greeted excitedly by children on their visit to the Casa Mateus day centre near Sao Paolo. Niersbach, League president Dr Reinhard Rauball and Lufthansa’s head of product and marketing Dr Reinhold Huber were accompanied by 23-time German international Cacau.

In January of this year, Lufthansa’s ‘help alliance’ provided funds for the renovation of the centre’s roof. Thanks to a €15,000 contribution from the DFB, the children can now receive further help and encouragement. This project is being supported as part of the German national team and the DFB’s Egidius Braun Foundation’s ‘Kinderträume’ (‘Children’s Dreams’) campaign.

"It gives us particular joy to be able to contribute towards providing a better future for the children and young people of Casa Mateus", said Huber. "Seeing the children’s happy faces encourages us in our efforts to promote other social projects in Brazil and beyond through the ‘help alliance’."

"Without this help we could not adequately support the children"

The centre’s children and young people were not only delighted with the donation but with the DFB t-shirts and Germany team shirts they received. As well as being introduced to the project, the delegation found time to take in the impressive ball skills of the children as they contested a friendly match to mark the upcoming World Cup. The students also enthusiastically introduced their guests from Germany to the basics of capoeira, a traditional Brazilian dance.

Father Carlos Musskopf from Casa Mateus expressed his gratitude by saying: "Without the help of the DFB and the ‘help alliance’, we could not adequately support the children and would not be able to carry out essential renovation work. This visit from the DFB President, Cacau and Lufthansa fills us all with immense pride."

DFB aid for Cacau’s ‘Sports for Life’ project

Cacau had two reasons for participating in the visit, as he presented the donation to Casa Mateus but is also benefiting from the ‘Kinderträume 2014’ campaign himself. DFB President Wolfgang Niersbach explained: "We’re delighted to be able to support Cacau with this excellent ‘Sports for Life’ project in his home region. It is one of 15 social projects the DFB and League are supporting in cooperation with the Children’s Mission Agency. While we are in Brazil we also want to focus on off-the-pitch issues, as we did with ‘Mexico-Hilfe’ (‘Mexico Aid’) almost 30 years ago."

Cacau added: "This support is an acknowledgement of the power of sport. I know from my own experience what it is like to have no prospects in life, and the way in which team sport can open up new opportunities. It’s very encouraging to know that the DFB is helping us to bring Brazilian girls and boys in from the margins of society."

Casa Mateus and the ‘help alliance’

Since 1980, Casa Mateus has helped approximately 200 needy children and young people each year, by giving them the power to help themselves. The centre provides needy families with social counselling and practical support, and also supports children and young people from the slums with the training opportunities, language courses and educational day care they need to fulfil their potential.

The subjects taught include IT, music, theatre and dance. The only condition for attending the courses is that all the children must attend regular school lessons. This year, the ‘help alliance’ has been supporting the renovation of the classrooms. The patron of this project within Lufthansa’s aid organisation is flight attendant Amie-Marlen Blaseck, who accompanied the delegation to visit her project.

The ‘help alliance’ was established by Lufthansa employees in 1999 and now encompasses approximately 40 charitable initiatives across the globe exclusively funded by donations. The alliance focuses primarily on children’s causes, seeking to build a better future through school and education projects.
