DFB seals new television contract

The German Football Association (DFB) has extended and expanded the existing television contract, guaranteeing added games and many more thrills to the fans.

ARD and ZDF, the major public television channels, will continue to broadcast the games of the national team, with the contract now being extended until June 30, 2012. For the first-time ever, Premiere, Germany’s leading provider in the pay-tv-market, has bought into the DFB television rights. Starting in 2008/2009, Premiere will show the games of the Cup competition, the DFB-Pokal. While ARD and ZDF will continue to show live DFB-Pokal games, Premiere’s wide slate of games enables fans to chose from an additional package.

DFB President Dr. Theo Zwanziger commented on the continuing partnership with ARD and ZDF: “There is a high comfort level in the partnership with ARD and ZDF. Gladly we confirm to the legislator’s obligation that games of the German national team need to be shown on a free-tv platform. ARD and ZDF had already obtained the rights for the 2014 FIFA World Cup and the 2011 Women’s World Cup, therefore extending the overall contract made a lot of sense.”

DFB General Secretary Wolfgang Niersbach pointed out that Premiere will now broadcast all 63 DFB Cup games live, using the popular conference option format: “The traditional freet-tv product is now enriched and complemented by our pay-tv slate of games, which will be a welcomed alternative and addition for football fans in Germany. The Cup is such a popular competition with a unique atmosphere - now we have added to the value of the DFB Pokal. All participating clubs and sponsors involved should benefit from the new contract.”
