DFB forwards Schalke’s note of protest to FIFA

The German Football Association (Deutscher Fußball-Bund) forwarded a note of protest by Bundesliga club Schalke 04 to football’s international governing body FIFA on Tuesday. FC Schalke 04 protest against the nomination and participation of their player Rafinha at this summer’s Olympic Games. The Brazilian defender travelled to Paris to join his country’s Olympic football team on Tuesday, thereby acting in opposition to the expressed wishes of Schalke 04. Last year’s third-place finisher Schalke 04 intends to take legal steps.

The DFB supports Schalke 04 as the association shares the club’s legal assessment of the situation. The Olympic football tournament is not part of FIFA’s international calendar. Neither has FIFA’s Executive Committee send out any resolution to the clubs, that players’ participation at the Beijing Olympic Games is mandatory.

“Everybody favours a peaceful coexistence of club football and the calendar of the national teams. For that mixture to succeed, we need a predictabilty of legal decisions. Rules and regulations need to be communicated at the earliest date possible”, said DFB Vice-President Dr. Rainer Koch. “Schalke as one of Europe’s elite clubs should not have to cope with such a last-second development. The DFB supports Schalke’s protest note. In this critical situation, we stand right next to Schalke 04 and the Bundesliga.”
