DFB extend Kuntz's contract until 2020

The German football association (DFB) have extended the contract of Germany U21 head coach Stefan Kuntz until 31st August 2020. Kuntz, who won EURO 1996 with Germany as a player, has coached the U21s since August 2016. In June, he led the German youngsters to U21 European Championship glory in Poland, beating Spain 1-0 in the final.

DFB president Reinhard Grindel said, "We're pleased that Stefan Kuntz will continue to coach our U21 squad. Last summer, he established a close partnership with the first team. The fact that we had two powerful squads, one competing in Russia (at the Confed Cup) and the other competing in Poland, both of which won their respective tournaments, is in no small part down to the outstanding co-operation between Jogi Löw and Stefan Kuntz. Stefan Kuntz brings a lot of passion and a high skill level to the table and we trust him to continue his successful work and build on the success that he has had up to now."

Kuntz: "Winning the EURO title awoke my enthusiasm"

Stefan Kuntz said: "I thank DFB President Reinhard Grindel, DFB General Secretary Dr. Friedrich Curtius and DFB Sporting Director Horst Hrubesch for the trust they have shown in me. I'm proud to be continuing to coach the Germany U21s. In winning the EURO title we achieved an aim which awoke my enthusiasm to carry on working with the best young German players in a great set-up. I'm particularly looking forward to continuing to work with my whole coaching staff. Our aim is now to qualify for the U21 EUROs in Italy and continue to develop players who will one day make the step up to the first team.

DFB Sporting Director Horst Hrubesch added, "Stefan Kuntz's contract extension is great news for the DFB and our U21s. He got the best out of our team at the EUROs in Poland, even though some of his players were with the full squad at the Confed Cup. Our joint aim is to continue to develop young players and benefit them in the best way we possibly can.

Qualification for the U21 EUROs in 2019 begins on 5th September with a home match in Osnabrück against Kosovo. The U21s play a friendly against Hungary in Paderborn on 1st September.
