DFB Disciplinary Board reduce Boateng ban to two games

The DFB Disciplinary Board have handed FC Bayern München’s Jérôme Boateng a two game ban after reviewing his red card for unsportsmanlike conduct. The DFB Supervisory Committee also requested the same punishment during the meeting in Frankfurt.

The Disciplinary Board decided not to follow through with the previous ruling of a three game ban but to instead reduce it to two games because “the tackle denied a clear goal scoring opportunity but there was no dangerous play involved and it didn’t result in a goal.” The judgement doesn’t take into consideration the fact that Boateng was also sent off last season.

Boateng was given his marching orders in the 17th minute of FC Bayern’s Bundesliga game against FC Schalke 04 on 3rd February 2015 by referee Bastian Dankert (Rostock).

Lorenz: “Sport jurisdiction not based on statistics”

Hans E. Lorenz, the chairman of the DFB Disciplinary Board, said about the judgement: “Jurisdiction and sports jurisdiction is not based on statistics but is liable to developments. The Disciplinary Board decided not to hand out any additional punishments to repeat offenders last year when the previous offence or the new one related to a one game suspension. From now one, that also applies when a professional foul has been committed.”

Lorenz went on to say: “If the penalty had been converted then Jerome Boateng would have only been banned for one game. The fact that Manuel Neuer saved it should not have a 200% increase on the punishment to three games.”

The Chairman of the DFB Disciplinary Board explained that this is the first case of something like that this season. From now on, the same ruling will apply to similar cases.
