DFB commercial service and ENGAGEMENT GLOBAL gGmbH to support 2014 FIFA World Cup in Brazil

DFB Wirtschaftsdienste GmbH Consulting & Sales Services and ENGAGEMENT GLOBAL gGmbH - Service für Entwicklungsinitiativen (Service for Development Initiatives) will join forces to promote sustainable urban development at the 2014 FIFA World Cup™. A corresponding memorandum of understanding was signed on 9 February 2012 by DFB Wirtschaftsdienste managing directors Ulrich Wolter and Denni Strich, their ENGAGEMENT GLOBAL gGmbH counterpart Bernd Krupp, and divisional manager Anita Reddy, responsible for Servicestelle Kommunen in der Einen Welt (SKEW, Service Agency Communities in One World), which will coordinate the joint activities.

The signatories will be partners in supporting the Host City Programme: Partners for Sustainable Urban Development initiative, organising a pooling of experience and knowledge transfer between German host cities for the 2006 FIFA World Cup and FIFA Women’s World Cup 2011, and the Brazilian host cities for 2014. Commissioned by the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ), the SKEW programme will be implemented in close cooperation with the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ, German International Cooperation Agency) office in São Paulo. The primary objectives are to support the host cities in Brazil in staging the FIFA World Cup, build capacities for sustainable urban development in those host cities, and promote development information and education work in German municipalities.

The Host City Programme successfully supported the host cities for the 2010 FIFA World Cup in South Africa, with the DFB already involved as a cooperating partner. The new agreement incorporates joint efforts in providing demand-oriented consulting services to the Brazilian host cities via central workshops, and corresponding events in Germany.

In Autumn 2011, the German FA assigned the marketing of the association and its World Cup Organising Committees’ products, services and expertise to its subsidiary DFB Wirtschaftsdienste GmbH Consulting & Sales Services. ENGAGEMENT GLOBAL gGmbH Service Agency Communities in One World arose from GIZ at the beginning of 2012.

“We are greatly honoured at the trust placed in us by ENGAGEMENT GLOBAL gGmbH to jointly support the Host City Programme in Brazil. Our objective is to adapt approaches and solutions from previous tournaments to local circumstances, supporting the Brazilian host cities in implementing host city activities. At the end of the day, administering the host city programme presents one of the most complex challenges at a World Cup,” commented DFB-Wirtschaftsdienste managing director Ulrich Wolter. “This agreement is a good example of how to build partnerships, making available German know-how in organising major sporting events,” said DFB General Secretary Wolfgang Niersbach.

ENGAGEMENT GLOBAL gGmbH managing director Bernd Krupp said: "The commitment of German cities to this programme is enormous and very helpful to our Brazilian partners. Through the agreement with the DFB, we are now in a position to cover topics which go beyond the purely municipal sphere. It's wonderful to have the expertise of the world’s biggest football association at our disposal. We anticipate a long and good partnership.”
