The German Football Association (DFB) will bid to host the 2024 UEFA European Championship, as DFB President Wolfgang Niersbach announced to UEFA President Michel Platini at the 41st ordinary DFB Congress in Nuremberg. At its meeting on 23 October, the DFB Presidential Board voted unanimously to bid to host the tournament in 11 years' time.
"18 years after the unique experience of the 2006 FIFA World Cup, the time will be right for a new summer fairytale in Germany", Niersbach said at the DFB Congress in Nuremberg. "The DFB last hosted a European Championship in 1988. We believe we have a good chance as the DFB has always given an excellent account of itself to FIFA and UEFA when hosting major tournaments in the past", explained Niersbach.
The decision to bid for 2024 will have no impact on Munich's application to host a package of games at EURO 2020, which will be played in 13 European cities. The UEFA Executive Committee is not expected to make a decision on which country will host EURO 2024 before 2017.
