DFB agrees to Steffen Freund release

Following three years of service as a juniors' coach, Steffen Freund is leaving the German Football Association. The European Champion of 1996, who did join the Deutscher Fußball-Bund (DFB) on July 13, 2009, has last coached the U 16 team. His contract was valid until July 31, 2013, and upon request by Freund was now terminated in mutual consent.

DFB General Secretary Helmut Sandrock said: "Steffen Freund had a successful tenure here with the DFB, he has matured as a coach. We understand his point his view that he feels ready for a new challenge. We wish him only the best for his future career."

Freund joins the Tottenham Hotspur

At the European Championship 2011, Freund had coached the German Under 17 juniors to a second place finish. The team went on to finish third at the World Cup in Mexico.

The 42-year old Freund joins the Tottenham Hotspur and will serve as the assistant coach the head coach Andre Vilas-Boas. During his playing days, Freund had played more than 100 league games for the Spurs between 1999 and 2003, and was then included in the club's 'Hall of Fame'.
