DFB Academy and citizen's park get the green light after referendum

The DFB-Academy and citizen’s park in Niederrad will become a reality. In the first ever citizen’s referendum in the history of the town of Frankfurt am Main, the required quorum to cancel the construction plans of nr. 916 "DFB-Akademie – südlich Niederräder Landstraße" came up significantly short. Only 62,900 of the 497,600 votes were ‘yes’ according to official provisional results. Only at 124,400 ‘yes’ votes, would the 25% hurdle have been reached. So it means that the DFB Academy and the citizen’s park will be built.

Wolfgang Niersbach: “The current result confirms the decision of the municipal authorities, who have clearly spoken for the construction of the DFB-Academy with a clear majority. There were more than 40,000 votes for the DFB-Academy, with only 10% of the overall votes against the project. The large majority of people in Frankfurt have therefore not followed the propositions of the referendum. I assume the racetrack advocates respect the clear decision of the citizens, as we would have also done if things had gone the other way.”

Helmut Sandrock: “We said from the start that we would like to stay in Frankfurt and not pursue a Plan B. We’re therefore all the happier that lots of citizens have followed our transparent information and the good arguments put forward. The people of Frankfurt were finally convinced of the added value of an academy and a public citizen’s park, and this turned down the public petition.”

Oliver Bierhoff: “The ‘NO’ vote from lots of Frankfurt citizens at this referendum was a YES to the future of football in Germany. The encouragement will boost this flagship project further and assures us that our plans are always in Frankfurt and with transparent communication. We will now push forward the content and concept for the academy, and the realisation of the innovative ideas.”

Hansi Flick: “I’m delighted at how many people in Frankfurt have recognised the importance of this project for the development of our young players and the education of our coaches. The path is clear for the DFB-Academy after the clear outcome from the referendum and will be a place where we can gather our comprehensive knowledge of football and develop new ideas, which will keep us competitive at the top for the long term and benefit the whole foundation.”
