Derby-hero Kehrer: "I had goosebumps"

Germany U21 international Thilo Kehrer was one of the best players for FC Schalke 04 during their 1-1 draw in the Ruhrderby with Borussia Dortmund. The 20-year-old crowned his performance by scoring the 1-1 equaliser in the second half, notching his first Bundesliga goal in his twelfth top-flight appearance.

In an interview with DFB.de the S04 defender talks about his emotions following the goal, a prophecy from his national team colleague Leon Goretzka and the extra motivation he gets from playing for Germany.

Question: Thilo Kehrer, what did it feel like to score the 1-1 equaliser in front of the north stand?

Kehrer: That was pure emotions of course. I got goose bumps. The moment I struck the ball, I knew that I had made good connection and the ball actually went in. What happened afterwards was just pure joy.

Question: Leon Goretzka did not only provide you with the assist, but he also said that he predicted you would score a goal today. Although, he expected it would be a header… .

Kehrer: In the changing rooms we joked about how it would be a good time for me to score my first goal today. We did foresee a header from a set-piece though, but I’m obviously overjoyed with the way it happened.

Question: It was your first Bundesliga goal and you scored it in the derby. Will you be receiving any gifts from your team mates, or do you have to buy everyone a round of drinks now?

Kehrer: We will have to talk about that.

Question: Unlike you, Dortmund’s Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang put on a mask after he scored his goal...

Kehrer: That’s his thing. I don’t need to wear a mask.

Question: Schalke looked closer to victory towards the end of the game. What is your take on the situation in added time, when it appeared that Dortmund’s Marc Batra handled the ball in the area?

Kehrer: I saw the ball bounce onto his hand from a close distance. He did have his hand raised up quite high. I don’t think it was a natural movement and with some luck we could’ve been awarded a penalty and get the chance to win the game 2-1.

Question: Are you still satisfied with the draw? After all, Dortmund did have chances to add to their lead before you scored the equaliser.

Kehrer: I think looking at the whole game; the 1-1 draw is a deserved result.

Question: What did your coach Markus Weinzierl say to you after the game?

Kehrer: He congratulated me on my goal and on my good performance.

Question: Did you receive any extra motivation from making your first appearances for Germany’s U21 in the previous week?

Kehrer: I definitely got a push from that. To a certain extent, it confirmed that I’m doing a solid job and shows that people acknowledge that I’m doing a good job. I was very happy about the nomination and took a good feeling into the derby from it.

Question: Your next game is already around the corner, as you face Werder Bremen on Tuesday. What do you expect from that game?

Kehrer: They are a completely different opponent. We will prepare well for the game and attempt to give 100 percent on the pitch and win the game.
