De Bruyne: “It’s a great day for us”

VfL Wolfsburg have won the DFB Cup for the first time. DFB.de got the reactions to the Wolves’ 3-1 win over against Borussia Dortmund in the 72nd final in the competition’s history.

Joachim Löw (Germany manager): “Wolfsburg have been very consistent all year. The remained confident even after going 1-0 down and scored three goals in the first half. They deserved it. They were a little uncertain for the opening 10 minutes, but were the dominant team after that.”

Dieter Hecking (VfL Wolfsburg manager): “It was an incredible performance from the entire team. We tried to remain solid at the back, but we also know that we have a lot of quality going forward. You could see our lack of final experience in the early stages.”

Kevin de Bruyne (VfL Wolfsburg): “At the end of the day, it’s deserved, but the first 20 minutes weren’t good. 3-1 was enough at the end. It’s a great day for us.”

Diego Benaglio (VfL Wolfsburg captain): “It’s a feeling of pure joy at the moment, but somehow it’s unreal too. We rewarded ourselves today for a really good season. We wanted to win the game for Junior and we managed to do that. It makes it even more special. Junior remains a part of this team and always will be.”

Klaus Allofs (VfL Wolfsburg): “The team responded brilliantly to going behind early on. If you want to carry on developing, then winning titles like this are part and parcel of it.”

Bas Dost (VfL Wolfsburg): “It’s been an incredible year for me. I started in the stands, watching my teammates, and then I got my chance and scored goals. We simply deserved it. It’s been an amazing season.”

Jürgen Klopp (Borussia Dortmund manager): “We did a lot of things right, but we didn’t have luck on our side. Credit to Dieter Hecking and VfL Wolfsburg, they deserved to win, but it was an unnecessary defeat for us.”

Sebastian Kehl (Borussia Dortmund): “Football is a tough, old game. You have to say that Wolfsburg were the better team over the 90 minutes and ultimately deserved to win. We couldn’t crank it up in the second half. It’s a real blow to end my career with a defeat today.”
