Darmstadt promoted to the top flight

Everything has been sorted in the second division. SV Darmstadt have finished second in the table and have been promoted to the Bundesliga alongside Ingolstadt. Karlsruher SC will face Hamburger SV in a play-off to decide who will obtain the final place in the top-tier.

Erzgebirge Aue have dropped into the third division, as have VfR Aalen. 1860 München will face Holstein Kiel in a play-off.

Kempe’s free kick seals the deal

Darmstadt started strongly but struggled to break down a solid St. Pauli defence. At the interval they were in fourth place in the table and looked like they would be spending another year in the second division. However, the situation changed dramatically with just 19 minutes left on the clock. Tobias Kempe curled home a magnificent free kick, which sealed promotion for Dirk Schuster’s side.

Kaiserslautern miss out

Kaiserslautern took the lead shortly before the interval against champions Ingolstadt though Erik Thommy (41’). Max Christiansen equalised for the visitors with seven minutes left on the clock. Results elsewhere meant that Kaiserslautern miss out on promotion.

Karlsruher nerves were settled early on thanks to an early own goal from 1860 München’s Kai Bülow. The Lions could have been relegated automatically but managed to give themselves another chance in the upcoming relegation play-off even though Manuel Torres got a late second for the hosts, who have a promotion shootout to look forward to.

Late goal can’t save Aue

Erzgebirge Aue drop into the third division despite a remarkable turn of events in their game against 1. FC Heidenheim. A victory could have seen them survive; however, the hosts went 2-0 in front thanks to goals from Kevin Kraus (55’) and Robert Leipertz (72’). A penalty from Patrick Schönfeld (80’) and an 88th minute header from goalkeeper Martin Männel gave Aue hope, but they ran out of time.

FSV Frankfurt beat Fortuna Düsseldorf 3-2 in a final day thriller. Edmond Kapllani (11’) had put the visitors in front but a quickfire double from Lukas Schmitz and Ihlas Bebou turned the game on it’s head. Kapllani got his second just minutes later to cap off an explosive first half and a late winner from Zlatko Dedic ensured that FSV beat the drop.

Aalen, who had been relegated ahead of the final matchday, couldn’t exit the division with a victory. Dave Bulthuis fired Nürnberg in front in the first half. VfR equalised early in the second half thanks to Jürgen Gjasula’s goal but they went down defeated as a result of Guido Burgstaller’s last gasp goal.

Leipzig beat - Braunschweig end with a defeat

RB Leipzig finish the season in fifth as a result of their 2-0 victory over SpVgg Greuther Fürth. Daniel Frahn fired them in front after 30 minutes; Dominik Kaiser doubled their advantage on the stroke of half time.

Eintracht Braunschweig lost 2-0 to Union Berlin on the last day of the season. Fabian Schönheim have them the lead shortly after the break and Sebastian Polter grabbed the second with 31 minutes left on the clock.
