Daniel Nivel as DFB - Guest of honour at the international match against France

Daniel Nivel fell victim to a brutal attack of German Hooligans during the World Championships in France in 1998 and still suffers from the severe injuries. Today he will accept the invitation of the German Football association visit the sold out match of France against Germany at the Stade de France.

The 58-year-old Frenchman and his wife Laurette arrived in Paris, where the DFB-president Wolfgang Niersbach welcomed them at the team hotel. “The 21 of June 1998 is a black day in the history of the German Football”, said Niersbach. “That is why we all, of the DFB and the German team, are even more happy that Daniel Nivel accepted our invitation and that we will watch this football classic together.”

Meeting of the Daniel-Nivel-foundation

A group of German Hooligans attacked the at the time 43-year-old riot-policemen on the day of the World Cup’s preliminary round game between Germany and Yugoslavia. Even when he lay on the ground, his attackers hit him with a shotgun on the head. The district court of Essen sentenced the four attackers with imprisonments of three and a half to ten years. Already at the World Cup in 2006 the DFB invited Daniel Nivel, who at that time visited the group-game between Germany and Poland together with the honour president Egidius Braun at the Westfahlenstadion in Dortmund.

On Thursday a work-meeting of the Daniel-Nivel-foundation and the Franco-German Youth Office will take place in Paris. Also, the security commissioner of the DFB, Hendrik Große-Lefert, will be at the meeting. The foundation was set up in 2000 to develop preventative measures against football-oriented violence.
