Dallmann scores winner in Canada friendly

Germany Women had Linda Dallmann to thank for their 2-1 victory over Canada on Sunday. In their last test before this summer’s European Championships in Erfurt, Dallmann’s late strike was enough to defeat the side who finished third at the Olympics in 2016. An owl goal from Canadian goalkeeper Kailen Sheridan had given the hosts the lead, befire Deanne Rose equalised before half-time.

“We made that hard for ourselves,” said coach Steffi Jones. „In the first half we were too static, but we showed in the end we are able to make things better.”

In a repeat of last year’s Olympic semi-final, Jones switched back to a 4-4-2 system and forced the visitors into a lot of early mistakes. The lead came from a mistake too, as Canadian keeper Sheridan sliced a backpass from Shelina Zadorsky into her own net.

Jones’s side continued to exert pressure with high pressing on the Canadian back-up goalkeeper. The home side looked to get down the wings, but failed to create any clear cut chances and when Germany failed to react to a quick counter attack it was left for Rose to fire home the leveller from Janine Beckie’s pass.

The second half was a more even affair, with very few clear openings, before Dallmann poped up late on to knock in the winner.

Preparations for the Euros will now begin before the team come together in their training came on June 18. The tournament in Holland will see Jones’ team take on Sweden, Italy and Russia in their group between July 17 and 25.
