Dadashov’s goal fires U17s into EURO semis

The Germany U17s’ European Championship title dreams are still alive after Meikel Schönweitz’s side secured a narrow but deserved 1-0 win over Belgium in the quarterfinals. They will play either Spain or England in the semi-finals in Baku’s Dalga Arena on Wednesday.

"Huge credit to my team. They put in a very passionate and physical performance," said Schönweitz. "We had to work very hard to get the win. We were able to impose our game on the Belgians and created the better chances. We will now recuperate and begin our preparations for the semi-finals. The team are in good form and will go into the next game full of confidence."

The only goal of the game was scored early in the second half by RB Leipzig’s Renat Dadashov. "I'm very happy that I was able to help the team with my goal. I struck the ball well and it flew nicely through the air. We’re thrilled to have reached the semi-finals and want to give our all in the next game as well," said the winning goalscorer. His teammate Arne Meier spoke of a hard-fought quarterfinal: "That game cost us a lot of energy. We invested a lot into it as a team. Belgium put us under a lot of pressure after we went 1-0 up, and we should have done better with our counterattacks during that spell. Nevertheless, we’re delighted with the victory."
