Cup facts: Arminia’s attacking full backs

The dream edges ever closer. Only eight teams remain. Who will lift the trophy? Who will win the DFB Cup? The quarter-finals will take place on Tuesday and Wednesday. Four games, seven facts – DFB.de takes a look at the most important ones ahead of the games.

Bad omen: FC Bayern are top of the Bundesliga, they’re in the quarter-finals of the Champions League and the DFB Cup and could set a new record. No team has ever won the DFB Cup three times in a row. However, qualification to the next round isn’t certain if you look back at their last game in the cup against Leverkusen. They have won three of the last four meetings between the two sides in the Bundesliga though. They were knocked out of the DFB Cup in the quarter-finals back in 2009 by Leverkusen after losing 4-2 in their previous cup meeting. The goals for Leverkusen that day were scored by Tranquillo Barnetta, Arturo Vidal, Patrick Helmes and Stefan Kießling, with Lucio and Miroslav Klose scoring for FCB.

Bonus: All of the teams in the quarter-finals have received €1.976 million from the DFB so far. Getting through to the semi-finals is very lucrative for the clubs that do so as they will receive a further €2.073 million. The bonuses for the final have not been confirmed yet.

The million mark: 56 of the 63 games in the DFB Cup have been played so far. 977,355 spectators have attended those games, which is an average of 17,452 fans per game. Looking at the capacities of the grounds in Wolfsburg, Dortmund, Bielefeld and Leverkusen, the number of fans attending the games should reach the 1 million mark in the quarter-finals. The Signal Iduna Park in Dortmund alone has a capacity of 80,667.

The participants: The biggest surprise in the DFB Cup this season have been Arminia Bielefeld. The leaders of the 3. Liga would like to add another Bundesliga team to their list of scalps after already knocking out Hertha BSC and Werder Bremen. Borussia Mönchengladbach will visit Bielefeld in the quarter-finals. The remaining teams to reach the quarter-finals along with the four best teams in the Bundesliga this season – FC Bayern München, VfL Wolfsburg, Borussia Mönchengladbach and Bayer Leverkusen – are SC Freiburg, TSG Hoffenheim and Borussia Dortmund.

Arminia’s attacking full backs: The third division side have the most dangerous defensive duo in Sebastian Schuppan and Florian Dick. Dick has scored a goal and provided three assists in the first three games, whilst Schuppan has scored twice. Against Bremen in the last 16, the two full backs linked up to put Arminia 2-0 in front: cross from Dick, goal from Schuppan.

Goal line technology: Hawk-Eye technology will be used in German football for the first time in the 2015 final. It will help the referee and tell him whether a goal has been scored or not. However, it won’t be in use in the quarter-finals but that could change next season. “It’s been agreed that we should use the technology when it’s available,” said DFB Presidential Board member Peter Frymuth. It could be possible to use a mobile system in the quarter-finals in the stadiums that don’t have cameras. Hawk-Eye will be used in the Bundesliga for the first time next season.

Quarter-final stalwarts: FC Bayern München, Borussia Dortmund and VfL Wolfsburg are all in the last eight of the DFB Cup for the third time in a row. Bayern have won the cup 17 times and have reached at least the quarter-finals in every season since 2007/2008. The last team to stop them from doing that was Alemannia Aachen, who beat the record holders 4-2 at home on 20th December 2006.
