Crunch clash in Borussia-Park

The closing game of matchday 30 of the Bundesliga season is also the weekend’s highlight: Borussia Mönchengladbach host VfL Wolfsburg (17:30 CEST). Earlier in the day (15:30 CEST), SC Paderborn face Werder Bremen.

The game in Borussia-Park will have ramifications on the race for the Champions League. If the Wolves win the game, they strengthen their grip on second spot and will be closer to guaranteeing automatic qualification to Europe’s premier club competition. Should the hosts win, their chances of getting into the group stages increase, whilst also making the race for second in the table more interesting.

Dieter Hecking could have a selection dilemma for the game. Kevin De Bruyne André Schürrle and Vieirinha all missed the Europa League second leg against Napoli and it’s unclear whether they will be available for Sunday’s encounter. The game has come too early for Gladbach’s Martin Stranzl but Roel Brouwers remains optimistic: “I think that facing Wolfsburg is better for us than playing a team who sit back. They like to get forward, which means we should have chances to hit them on the counter.”

Wolfsburg remain seven points clear of Borussia, who are currently nine games unbeaten. The Wolves haven’t won on each of their last four visits to Borussia-Park but have won three of the last four meetings of the sides.

Paderborn dreaming of survival

Newly promoted Paderborn are hoping for a repeat of their last home game. Andre Breitenreiter’s beat Augsburg last time and a victory over Bremen would strengthen their hopes of survival.

Bremen have good memories of facing Paderborn – they beat them 4-0 earlier in the season and another victory would see them remain on the cusp of qualification for the Europa League.
