The relegation battle continues in the Bundesliga. With two games to go, plenty of sides are still in danger of slipping into the second-tier. Stuttgart hosted Mainz in the day’s late game, knowing that they couldn’t move off the bottom but that a victory would leave them just a point adrift of safety.
Huub Stevens’ side picked up their first victory over Mainz since matchday 29 of the 2011/12 season thanks to goals from Daniel Didavi and Filip Kostic. Didavi opened the scoring in the first half with a powerful effort from long range, however, Mainz keeper Loris Karius will be disappointed that he didn’t manage to keep the shot out. Victory was confirmed with just over ten minutes left when Filip Kostic latched onto a poor clearance before rifling home. Martin Schmidt’s Mainz side are now 11th in the table and although they aren’t mathematically assured of safety, an unlikely chain of events would have to take place for them to be playing their football in the second division next season.
