Colourful opening ceremony as EURO 2016 begins with France win

Folklore, 150 dancers and a star DJ: France produced an entertaining and colourful spectacle at the opening ceremony for EURO 2016, before the real highlight came on the pitch as the hosts beat Romania 2-1. Shortly before kick-off, David Guetta wowed the fans with his official tournament song “This One’s For You”.

The 16-minute pre-match show in front of 80,000 spectators at the Stade de France had the theme “Football brings people together”. It was followed by an thrilling game of football, as Dimitri Payet’s late stunner handed France victory in their opening group game.

The opening ceremony was broken down into three acts. The first demonstrated cultural diversity and highlighted the host nation’s characteristics. The second act focused on Europe and France’s 23 fellow participants.

Then came David Guetta on a large carousel in the centre circle, as he performed EURO 2016’s official song together with singer Zara Larsson. The match build-up ended with the Patrouille de France painting the Pairs skies with the Tricolore.
