Classic against Italy to begin season

The first international match of the new season is a cracker to start with for the Germany U20s team. Frank Wormuth’s team have travelled to Lucca, Tuscany to play Italy today at 16:00 CEST.

After losing in the quarter finals of the World Cup in New Zealand, Wormuth has ‘rejuvenated’ his team. Alongside established names like Tobias Pachonik (Stuttgarter Kickers), Grischa Prömel (Karlsruher SC), Maximilian Wittek (1860 München) and Marvin Stefaniak (Dynamo Dresden), there are 15 players hoping to make their debut in this classic encounter.

Amongst these players are some with Bundesliga experience, such as Marvin Schulz and Mahmoud Dahoud (both Borussia Mönchengladbach), Max Christiansen (Ingolstadt), Maxililian Eggestein (Werder Bremen) and Luca Waldschmidt (Eintracht Frankfurt). European U19 champion Hany Mukhtar (Red Bull Salzburg) and nine other players had to decline their call-ups due to injuries.

Wormuth’s team in Poland on Monday

Last season ended rather disappointingly for Germany’s youth players. After six matches in a league with Poland, Italy and Switzerland, Germany were third on five points (one win, two draws and three defeats). This year the team are hoping for more, like in 2013/14 when Germany won the competition with ten points.

After the Italy game, Wormuth’s team then travel to Wloclawek to play Poland on Monday (17:00 CEST). This international season will include six games (home and away) until the end of the 2015/16 season. From 7th until 13th October, Germany U20s will be hosting the Mercedes Benz Elite Cup, with England, the Netherlands and Turkey also taking part.
