The Munich side, who were then a third division side, defeated second division Chemnitzer side 4-1 on penalties after drawing 2-2 in extra time. Bayern’s line-up that day included a young Dietmar Hamann, Sammy Kuffour and Alexander Zickler.
Now the Sky Blues will get their chance to play against the ‘real’ Bayern. Now it’s no contest when it comes to the favourites tag, even if they’ll be in the middle of their season when Bayern arrive to play their first competitive fixture in the community4you Arena. Chemnitzer have tried eight times since the 2000s and only reached round two twice, while in the same time frame those from Munich have lifted the trophy on eight occasions.
