Chancellor Merkel's good luck message

Chancellor Angela Merkel has offered a “good luck” message to Die Mannschaft, which she hopes will help fire them to European Championship glory in France this summer. “I’ve got no concrete plans to attend any games yet,” she explained to a Federal Government Podcast, however, she added that she “will certainly follow as many matches as possible.”

During the team’s first game, which is against Ukraine on Sunday in Lillie on Sunday (21:00 CEST), Merkel will be on a plane heading to China. “I’m sure that the team are fully motivated. They’ll pull together once again and show the characteristics which help make Germany what it is today: diversity, unity, tolerance and respect. I know that there is a desire to provide the fans with as good a side as possible.”

The Chancellor hopes that there is another opportunity for a dressing room photo with a triumphant team this summer – she visited the players after they beat Argentina in the final of the 2014 World Cup and was given the chance to have a picture with them and the trophy. “Sharing that moment was special,” said Merkel.
