Champions thrash cup winners

Sandro Wagner with brace for Darmstadt

Bremen took the lead with their first chance in Darmstadt. Aron Johannson headed in after 20 minutes, scoring his second of the season. Sandro Wagner equalised from the penalty spot ten minutes later to level the scores at the break. The former Germany U21 international sent the home fans into raptures by scoring the winning goal in the 84th minute.

After the joys of the derby win against Gladbach last weekend, Köln were too passive in the capital, conceding the only goal of the game shortly before the break, as Vedad Ibisevic scored his first goal in a Berlin shirt. It was the Bosnian’s first Bundesliga goal since January 2014 and he went on to score a second in the 90 +4th minute to seal a 2-0 win for his side.

Robert Lewandowski re-wrote the history books on matchday 6 in the Bundesliga as FC Bayern continued their perfect start to the season. In the top of the table clash with last season’s runners up and DFB Cup winners VfL Wolfsburg, the Poland international scored five goals in nine minutes to seal a 5-1 win for the hosts.

It was the first time in 24 years that a player scored five goals in a match, as well as the quickest hattrick in league history. Lewandowski took 3:22 minutes to score his first three, beating Michael Tönnies record of a five minute hattrick set on 27th August 1992 during the 6-2 win against Karlsruher SC. It was also the last time that a player had scored five goals in a single Bundesliga match.

The win takes the Munich side back to the top of the table with maximum points (18), at least until Borussia Dortmund play on Wednesday evening. Wolfsburg remain in third place, seven points off the top. Köln drop down to seventh after the 2-0 defeat to Hertha BSC, who jump up to fifth.

Hamburger SV sealed a late 1-0 win against FC Ingolstadt thanks to an 87th minute winner from Michael Gregoritsch. Ingolstadt’s wait for a first home goal of the season goes on as they sit in eighth place, level on points with HSV. In the fourth Tuesday night game, Darmstadt 98 beat Werder Bremen 2-1 to take them into tenth place, whilst the Bremen side dropped down to twelfth.

Lewandowski writes history

In the highly anticipated fixture, Dieter Hecking’s plan to spoil the Oktoberfest festivities for the hosts couldn’t have started better. The Wolfs invited Bayern to attack and hit them quick on the counter – a strategy that seemed to pay off in the 26th minute when Daniel Caligiuri volleyed the ball past Manuel Neuer at the near post to make it 1-0.

Bayern, with World Cup winners Manuel Neuer, Philipp Lahm, Jerome Boateng, Mario Götze and Thomas Müller all in the starting XI, dominated possession and waited for the cracks to appear in the Wolfsburg defence. But it was the away side who almost made it 2-0 as Joshua Guilavogui hit the post from the half-way line after Neuer rushed out from his goal and lost the ball.

Pep Guardiola reacted quickly at half time, bringing on Lewandowski for the second half - a decision that would be more than vindicated. The Poland international scored the quickest hattrick in Bundesliga history between the 51st-55th minute, before scoring goals four and five in the 57th and 60th minute.

Wolfsburg were completely blown away and had no response to the sensational second-half performance from the hosts’ super sub. After Lewandowski’s mad nine minutes, the record champions held on to their four goal lead in convincing fashion.
